The Russian Model of Democracy

The article elaborates discusses the contemporary Russian model of democracy that took shape in 1990s. The broad presidential powers form a key feature of that model. The accumulation of power in the Presidency, as provided for in the Constitution, entails the discreditation of the role of the Parliament and the political parties thus leading to the over-expansion of the role of the state apparatus in the process of governance. That is why the greatest threat for the Russian model is the fact that in the context of that super-presidential regime and overexpanded role of the administration there can be no favourable environment for real political competition.
