Ortodox Conservatism: Traditions And Values

The author upholds the thesis that during the revival period the Orthodox Church was the only institution that became the carrier of the democratic idea. Consequently, it should be possible to claim that political democracy in our country originated from Church democracy. The paper examines the ideological discord between ‘the old' and ‘the young' during the struggle for Church independence and after it. Against this background, the author outlines the main conservative values and draws the conclusion that the historic role of Orthodox conservatism resides in ‘redefining those traditional and universal human values that were previously turned into ideology by totalitarian rule while restoring their authentic meaning'.
